Where to get a tattoo in Philadelphia 2019 – a list of the best tattoo shops


So you’re thinking about getting some fresh ink and wondering where is the best place to go in Philadelphia. In the city of brotherly love, you’ll find tattoo shops in almost every neighborhood.

No Ka Oi Tiki Tattoo

No Ka Oi Tiki Tattoo, 610 S 4th St. in Queen Village.

Located in Queen Village, “no ka oi” is Hawaiian for “the best,” according to the store’s website.

The unique decor, from ceiling clouds to palm trees, gives the place a relaxing atmosphere that you won’t find anywhere else in Philadelphia.

The artists mainly do custom designs, but there is also a selection of flash sheets and walk-ins are welcome.

Philadelphia Eddie’s Tattoo, 621 S 4th St. in Queen Village.

Philadelphia Eddie’s is probably the best known store in town. The name is immediately recognizable.

It was founded by Crazy Philadelphia Eddie, born Eddie Funk, who became a legend in the tattoo world.

“Tattooing is by appointment or impulse,” according to the shop, which has a classic tattoo parlor vibe.

If you’re looking to think big, you might want to go to Olde City Tattoo. The artists in the shop do a lot of larger pieces.

Real Hand Company

Site: 2345 E. Susquehanna Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19125

True Hand Society, 2345 East Susquehanna Ave. in Fishtown.

The studio and design firm, founded by tattoo artist Mike Ski and designer Jessie Jay, is located in a renovated church.

It is home to eight tattoo artists, each with their own style, available by appointment only.

Black Vulture Gallery

Location: 208 E. Girard Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19125

Black Vulture Gallery, 208 E. Girard Ave. in Fishtown.

Black Vulture in Fishtown is both a tattoo studio and a gallery. The space is unique with walls completely covered in artwork.

The shop’s versatile group of tattoo artists takes both walk-ins and dates.

Eastern Pass Tattoo

Location: 1835 E. Passyunk Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19148

It was the shop that inked Gritty’s tattoo as a deity – possibly the mascot’s first tattoo. Veteran artist Scott Bakoss did the work.

Eastern Pass is located above the vintage/thrift store Jinxed in East Passyunk. The shop recommends to those who want to stop by, visit the studio and meet the artists before making an appointment.

The studio also takes appointments if time permits.

Seven Swords Tattoo Company

Location: 2580 Frankford Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19125

In this shop in Kensington there is a large selection of flash sheets with illustrations, but Seven Swords’ artists also do custom tattoo designs.

There are eight resident artists, each with a ton of experience and their own unique style.

Art machine productions

Location: 1345 Frankford Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19125

Fishtown’s Art Machine Productions is both a tattoo shop and an art gallery. There are 10 resident tattoo artists.

Fun fact: Tattoo artist/owner Tim Pangburn appeared on TLC’s “America’s Worst Tattoos,” where he fixed old, bad tattoos.

Frequency Tattoo Co.

Location: 4038 Ridge Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19129

Located in East Falls, Frequency is home to four tattoo artists who do custom designs. Tattoo artist John Howie, who has a background in fine arts, owns the shop.
