You rarely hear me say “Aw, what a cute bug”, but when it comes to ladybugs, I have a thing for them. Ladybugs are also known as coccinellidae and belong to the beetle family. In North America we call them ladybugs, but in other parts of the world they have very different names. For example, they are called ladybirds in Britain and others may call them ladybugs.
There are 5,000 different species of ladybugs in the world. The most common species is the coccinella septempunctata, or the seven-spotted ladybug. These are widespread throughout Europe and North America, being the state insect of Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Ohio and Tennessee. Although ladybugs are most often red, they come in other colors such as yellow, orange, black, brown, and gray. The rarest colored ladybugs are tan, with only two specimens ever caught.
Over the years, many ladybugs have appeared on television and in movies. Some of our favorite examples include Francis from 1998’s “A Bug’s Life” and the Ladybug voiced by Nick Kroll in Netflix’s “Big Mouth.” There have also been plenty of fantastical ladybug tattoos over the years.
