It’s hard to imagine what life would be like without the Internet. The internet shapes many aspects of our lives, from our jobs and our dating practices, to our entertainment and ordering pizza. There are no limits to how you can use the internet and it will only continue to take over the human race in the future.
The origins of the Internet date back to the 1960s, when the United States Department of Defense used it to enable time sharing between computers. This group was called the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network or ARPANET, which allowed multiple computers to communicate over a network using packet switching. During the 1970s the first networked email system was created and in 1983 the domain name system was established to better name websites. In 1985, Symbolics.com, a Massachusetts-based computer company, became the first registered domain, and in 1990 HTML was created by CERN scientist Tim Berners-Lee. The modern Internet made its debut in the 1990s and in 1991 the World Wide Web went mainstream.
During the 1990s, many of the websites that we still know about popped up. For example, Yahoo! launched in 1994, Match.com launched in 1995, Netflix (as a DVD mailer) launched in 1997, and Google’s search engine launched in 1998. Throughout the 2000s, the internet would only continue to grow thanks to sites like WordPress, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. And today the internet is ingrained in our daily lives and you wouldn’t be reading this article or looking at those tattoos without it.
