On September 24, 1964, “The Munsters” debuted on NBC. Although the show only had two seasons, it ran for 70 episodes and would go on to become one of the most famous sitcoms in television history. “The Munsters” followed a family of monsters living at 1313 Mockingbird Lane in the fictional town of Mockingbird Heights. Family patriarch Herman Munster (played by Fred Gwynne) draws inspiration from Frankenstein’s monster, but with a goofy, comedic flair. His wife, Lily Munster (portrayed by Yvonne De Carlo) is a charming vampire, as is his grandfather father (portrayed by (Al Lewis), who is inspired by Count Dracula. Then there are the children, the son Herman and Lily, Eddie (represented by Butch Patrick) who is a werewolf and Marilyn (played by Beverly Own and Pat Priest), their niece whose conventional beauty makes her the black sheep of the family.
‘The Munsters’ aired alongside another famous scary sitcom, ‘The Addams Family’. However, while “The Addams” Family has spawned several popular reboots, “The Munsters” has yet to reach the same level. There have been several “The Munsters” films over the years, with the exception of “Munster, Go Home!” from 1966. the films were all made for television.
There will be a new movie “The Munsters” hitting theaters and streaming on Peacock in 2022, which was written and directed by Rob Zombie. The new movie will likely contain plenty of Zombie quirks and eccentricities, following in the footsteps of his previous horror projects. The film stars Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily, Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman, and Daniel Roebuck as Grandpa.
