“SpongeBob SquarePants” is the longest-running animated series in Nickelodeon history. “The Fairly OddParents” comes in second, which ran for 10 seasons from 2001 to 2017. The series was created by Butch Hartman, who went on to create other popular series for the network, including “Danny Phantom.” “The Fairly OddParents” first aired as a short film as part of the “Oh Yeah! Cartoons” animated anthology series. It was short from 1998 to 2001 and due to its popularity was later greenlit in a 30 minute series.
“The Fairly OddParents” follows a 10-year-old boy who is neglected by his parents and treated poorly by his strident babysitter, Vicky. Yet he has granted two fairy godfathers, Cosmo and Wanda, who have the power to grant his every wish. However, those wishes eventually backfire and he is tasked with picking up the pieces. Voice actress Tara Strong plays Timmy, who you might recognize as the voice of Dil Pickles from “Rugrats” and Bubbles from “The Powerpuff Girls.” Many celebrities have also lent their voices to the show over the years, including Jay Leno, Alec Baldwin, Jason Bateman, and Gilbert Gottfried.
Although the series ended in 2018, the universe expanded with a spin-off series. “Pretty Odd Parents: Pretty Odd.” This series, which is a mix of live action and animation, premiered on March 31, 2022. Cosmo and Wanda return to this series, this time helping with the adventures of Timmy Turner’s cousin, Viv Turner, who is played by Audrey Grace Marshall. This spin-off series, as well as the original, are available to stream on Paramount+.
