Today we’re talking “Avatar,” and no, we’re not talking about The Last Airbender. We refer to “Avatar” by James Cameron. This epic sci-fi fantasy film debuted in 2009 after nearly 15 years in the planning. Cameron came up with the concept in 1994 and filming was to begin after she finished “Titanic”, however, the technology did not exist at the time. In 2005, Cameron began work on creating the language of the Na’vi, the indigenous tribe native to the exoplanetary moon Pandora. Cameron then began work on the screenplay in 2006 and shortly thereafter the entire project was budgeted at around $237 million.
“Avatar” premiered on December 10, 2009 and became the highest-grossing movie of all time. It grossed $2.8 billion at the box office and was only knocked out by 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ before regaining the title after the Chinese re-release of ‘Avatar’ in 2021. It was also nominated for nine Oscars and won three—Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.
More than ten years after the premiere of the first film, a second film is soon coming to theaters. “Avatar: The Way of Water” hits theaters on December 16, 2022. This movie had eight theatrical release delays and it was made on a budget of $250 million. A third film has concluded principal photography and is slated for release in December 2024. Two more sequels are also planned for 2026 and 2028.
